Mining In Society to preview MIRARCO's
Northern Advanced Virtual Reality Technology

April 20th , 2005

Sudbury, ON - Mining is no longer a pick and shovel business. Using the latest information management and gaming technology, Laurentian University's MIRARCO Mining Innovation will be previewing virtual reality projection technology used within the Northern Advanced Visualization Network (NAVNet) at the Mining In Society Show in the Toronto Convention Centre from Sunday, April 24, to Tuesday, April 26, 2005.

NAVNet is a collaborative effort between industry, government and academia that will link Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Red Lake and Timmins' Virtual Reality facilities to create the first mineral industry interpretation Network - bridging distance to bring researchers and practitioners together.

"Using Virtual Reality as a communication tool greatly reduces the amount of time and resources required to interpret the vast amounts of information used in modern exploration and mining operations," states Dr. Peter Kaiser, MIRARCO's President and 2004 recipient of the Canadian Institute of Engineering Fellowship.

NAVNet's goals are to improve how Ontario exploration and mining companies find and exploit ore bodies by:
- making leading-edge visualization and communication technologies available where mining and exploration is taking place;
- increasing the skill set and data flows within organizations; and
- attracting international investment by highlighting the value of Northern projects and properties.

The Mining Innovation, Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation (MIRARCO), founded in 1998, is a not-for-profit applied research and technical service company formed through collaboration between Laurentian University and the private and public sectors. MIRARCO promotes mining innovation and provides a bridge between researchers and industry.
