President named Chair of
MIRARCO Board of Directors, plus
new members from Inco, Falco, & Laurentian
Sudbury, Ontario - In the fall of 2003, at its Annual General Meeting, MIRARCO elected current member, George Pirie - President and CEO, Placer Dome Canada, as the new Chairman of the Board of Directors.
MIRARCO also welcomes three new Board members: Brian Maynard - Manager of Technical Services, Ontario Operations, Inco Limited; Allen Hayward - Vice President Mining, Falconbridge Limited; and Harley d'Entremont - Vice-recteur à l'enseignement et à la recherche (affaires francophones), Laurentian University.
George
Pirie - President and CEO, Placer Dome Canada
Mr. Pirie joined Placer Dome in 1985 at the Dome Mine, working in the Materials
Management Department until 1991 when he transferred to the Vancouver Corporate
Office. From 1991-1996, Mr. Pirie held various positions in the Internal Audit
Department, as well as the Project Development division. In 1996, he transferred
to Detour Lake Mine as Administration Superintendent, where he stayed until
1998, when he assumed responsibility for Commercial Manager for North America
for the Placer Dome Exploration division. In April 1999, Mr. Pirie was promoted
to Chief Financial Officer for Placer Dome North America, where he was responsible
for re-establishing both Placer Dome U.S. and Placer Dome Canada. In January
2000, he joined Placer Dome Canada as Chief Financial Officer, a role he continued
to fill after being promoted to his current position on an acting basis in
October 2001. He was appointed to Executive Vice-President on a permanent
basis in December 2002. Mr. Pirie holds an Honours Bachelor of Commerce degree
from Laurentian University
Harley
d'Entremont - Vice-recteur à l'enseignement et à la recherche
(affaires francophones), Laurentian University
Dr. d'Entremont came to Laurentian University in 2003 with 26 years of experience
in the post-secondary sector in Atlantic Canada. From 1988 to 2001, he was
the President of the Université Ste-Anne in Nova Scotia. While at the
Université de Moncton, from 1975 to 1988, he taught political science
and public administration and held various administrative positions such as
Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Social Science, Director of the Department of
Political Science and Director of the Master's Program in Public Administration.
Dr. d'Entremont holds a BA in political science from St. Mary's University,
a MPA from Dalhousie University, and a PhD in political science from the University
of Western Ontario.
Allen
Hayward - Vice President Mining, Falconbridge Limited
Mr. Hayward holds an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Mining from Leeds
University in England. He has been with Falconbridge since 1981 in various
mining roles including Manager of Business Planning in Toronto, and Mine Manager,
Kidd Mine. He was appointed Vice President and General Manager of the Sudbury
Mines/Mill Business Unit in 1999. Mr. Hayward assumed his current position
in 2002. With his new duties, he is responsible for the mining operations
for the nickel business. As well, he plays a key role in the development of
future nickel mining opportunities.
Brian
Maynard - Manager of Technical Services, Ontario Operations, Inco Limited
Mr. Maynard assumed his current position in 2002. His position includes accountability
for Mines Planning and Engineering, Mines Exploration, Mines Technology, and
Laboratory Services. Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Maynard worked
in the Manitoba operations of Inco for 21 years. He made huge contributions
to mines safety performance and the collaborative process for employee engagement
while at Thompson.
