CEM Hosts Seminar with Dr. Mohammed Abedin

The issue of arsenic contamination was the basis of a seminar hosted by MIRARCO’s Centre for Environmental Monitoring (CEM) on October 7th, 2003. Dr. Mohammed Joinal Abedin from the Department of Plant and Soil Science, University of Aberdeen, Scotland presented the seminar entitled Arsenic Uptake and Metabolism in Rice. This seminar was based on his research undertaken at the University of Aberdeen, and was very topical in light of the current soil-plant-water initiatives in the Sudbury region.

In Bangladesh, not only is the drinking water supply contaminated with arsenic, but this threat is also infecting the country’s rice due to irrigation of rice fields with tainted water. Dr. Abedin’s study investigated how chemical species of arsenic were accumulated by rice. It was found that arsenic accumulates in different parts of rice plants, though the accumulation rate depends on the variety.
