CEM Ready to Begin Phase One of Composting Project
In
May 2002, Jackie Richard of MIRARCO’s Centre for Environmental
Monitoring (CEM) began testing out a new composting technology
manufactured by Gagnon Renewable Resources Inc. – the Bio-Reactor.

Bio-Reactor |
The
purpose of the research was to investigate the rapid decomposition
of fish waste and sawdust in the Bio-Reactor, an in-vessel, aerobic
composting unit. Continuing with this research CEM has received
approximately $27,000 in funding from Materials and Manufacturing
Ontario (MMO) for Phase One of the two-phase project entitled
"Process Optimization with an Aerobic Bio-Reactor for Waste
Management." Phase One of the project will involve further
testing of the large volume Bio-Reactor. CEM has a proposal pending
for Phase Two, a two-year project composting a wide variety of
organic wastes using a smaller research-scale Bio-Reactor.

Grad Students Awarded OGSST - Tembec Scholarships
MIRARCO
is proud to announce that two of its Centre For Environmental
Monitoring (CEM) Grad Students, Lisanne Desbiens and Angela Keefe
were each awarded a $10,000 OGSST - Tembec Scholarship. The scholarship
is awarded to nominated students who have an above 80% average. |

Lisanne
Desbiens |
Lisanne
Desbiens,
who holds an H.B.Sc. from Wilfrid Laurier University, is currently
working on her M.Sc. in Biology at Laurentian University and with
CEM. With her supervisor, Dr. Graeme Spiers, Director of CEM,
Lisanne’s research will provide an understanding of the
controls on the distribution of nickel in Ramsey Lake. A secondary
objective of the study will be to investigate nickel isotopes
as a tool to quantify inputs, and to delineate potential variation
of nickel sources. The results of this study will provide crucial
information to aid the City of Greater Sudbury in ensuring potable
water quality from Ramsey Lake, which is the primary drinking
source for many Sudburians. |

Angela
Keefe |
Angela
Keefe
holds an H.B.Sc. in Biology from Nipissing University in North
Bay and is now seeking a Master of Science in Biology at Laurentian
University. With co-supervisors, Dr. Graeme Spiers and Dr. Peter
Nosko, Angela’s research will focus on the regeneration
of red pine in Ontario forests. The natural regeneration of red
pine in Ontario is on the decline, possibly due to the suppression
of wild fire, which plays an intricate role in red pine ecology.
Angela will examine the effectiveness of several silvicultural
practices to improve red pine regeneration. Fieldwork for the
study will take place at the Petawawa Research Forest, with the
analytical work being done at CEM. |
