Delegates from Around the World Attend Sudbury 2003 - Mining and the Environment Conference

On May 25th - 28th, 2003, approximately 350 environmental rehabilitation and protection scientists and technical experts from around the world gathered in Sudbury for the Sudbury 2003 – Mining and the Environment Conference (Sudbury 2003). MIRARCO’s Centre for Environmental Monitoring co-hosted the conference with the Canadian Land Reclamation Association. Sudbury 2003 allowed delegates to exchange knowledge on the latest technologies related to mine rehabilitation and environmental protection. About 150 researchers presented papers on a wide range of mining and environment related topics. Sudbury 2003 also featured approximately 30 poster presenters.

In addition to author and poster presentations, Sudbury 2003 delegates had a chance to participate in a number of pre-conference short courses, post-conference field trips, an arrival barbeque, a conference banquet and a public lecture.

2nd Annual Mine2-4D
International Users Conference and Workshops

Mine2-4D users around the world will be congregating in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada on September 2nd - 6th, 2003 to share ideas and learn about new developments. Mine2-4D is a mine planning and scheduling system that delivers cost and performance improvements through efficient data and change management. The conference will feature high-level users who will present papers on projects completed utilizing the various modules in Mine2-4D. A team of developers will highlight the next phase of Mine2-4D development. Registrants have the opportunity to participate in round-table discussions and training workshops as well. CLRA Presents Sudbury 2003 Student Awards

The Canadian Land Reclamation Association (CLRA) presented awards to a number of student paper and poster presenters at the Sudbury 2003 – Mining and the Environment Conference (Sudbury 2003). In the oral paper presentation category, first place went to Johan Van der Waals of the University of Pretoria in South Africa for his paper presentation entitled Long Term Heavy Metal Pollution Risk Due to the Use of Slag as Agricultural Limes on the South African Highveld. In the poster presentation category the first place winner was Nicole Baks from Nippissing University, with Plant Diversity, Abundance and Distribution on an Abandoned Copper-Nickel Roast Bed Near Sudbury, Canada; The Impact of Soil Toxicity.
