MIRARCO is Probing the Health of Ramsey Lake

MIRARCO and its Centre for Environmental Monitoring (CEM) have launched an unprecedented water quality project with far-reaching implications, through a project called "Probing the Health of Ramsey Lake." These efforts are supported in part by the Greater City of Sudbury, Laurentian University's Centre for Integrated Monitoring Technology (CIMTEC), the Cooperative Freshwater Ecology Unit, Inco Limited, Falconbridge Limited, Science North, and the European Space Agency.

This project examines the impact of watershed management and conflicting land use pressures on the primary drinking source for over 50,000 residents of Sudbury.
The research will be conducted using an innovative automated "toolchest" to detect, measure, and collect data. The data will then be integrated in CIMTEC's Design and Training Facility, and visualized in the Virtual Reality Facility, the ideal vehicle to couple water chemistry and hydrologic models with metal transport models involving atmospheric, landscape and in-lake sediment sources.

Professional Development Course: November 13 - 15
"Tunnelling and Brittle Failure of Excavations in Highly Stressed, Rockbursting Ground"
Instructor: Dr. Peter Kaiser, Chair for the Geomechanics Research Centre.

This course is intended for practicing engineers and geologists faced with challenges while tunnelling at depth in brittle rock. The content of the course will be of value to those involved in the design of underground mining excavations, large underground caverns and repositories in rock. The course will also feature software tutorials and case studies presented by Sandvik Tamrock Canada and others in the tunnelling industry.
