NAVNet

Connecting the North for Global Competitiveness

NAVNet will establish a network of virtual reality facilities linking Northern Ontario, with two linked facilities from Timmins and Thunder Bay, improve technology in the Red Lake and Sudbury locations and provide a mobile facility for other centres and remote mining and mineral exploration sites.

About NAVNet

NAVNet, the Northern Advanced Visualization Network, builds on a unique niche borne out of the technological evolution of virtual reality in mining.

This two-year project assists mining and exploration companies to more quickly and cost-effectively develop drilling plans, sell properties, increase project investments, facilitate executive and technical buy-in, train staff and create new jobs.

Building on initiatives such as OMET and Discover Abitibi, NAVNet uses the technology and know-how demonstrated in Laurentian University's Virtual Reality Laboratory to help stakeholders make critical decisions that depend on complex spatial information. As an exceptional communication network, NAVNet helps people remotely collaborate with other experts.

Because the facilities are "linked", teams from different regions can collaborate and make operational or planning decisions using real-time interaction and displaying live data with varied complexity.

This project targets communities, professionals, students, and mining/exploration companies working in the North. The basic framework of NAVNet is to subsidize pilot projects in which companies use visualization and virtual reality in new and innovative ways to more efficiently make decisions, and more convincingly obtain investment. The project also includes a phase to "Export Excellence" by promoting success stories through international investment conferences, media spotlights, and more. Finally, the project will result in HQP (Highly Qualified Personnel) development through student co-op placements, Master's or Ph.D. projects, and mine personnel / researcher training.

How does NAVNet work?

  1. Project partners have a technical or research objective, such as:
    • raise share and development capital
    • integrate my historical with current data for drill hole planning and resource estimation
    • evaluate the orebody interpretation presented by my consultants
    • determine whether my property is undervalued
    • train my staff to use 3D geological modelling software
    • use surface data to create sub-surface models
    • research how to more cost-effectively manage and interpret my data
    • create web-enabled 3D visualization and GIS models for advanced exploration targeting
    • "test drive" students in projects as a low-cost training alternative, with opportunities to hire them upon graduation.

  2. Partners briefly discuss the project with MIRARCO. A team is assembled to assist, which may comprise of MIRARCO research staff (geologists, engineers, etc.), students (co-op undergraduate, Master's or Ph.D.), and other field experts, as agreed upon by the partner.

  3. The project is undertaken in a pilot form, usually $10-50k. Additional funding programs are evaluated, and as a courtesy to partners, application assistance is provided to help leverage their contribution at a 1:1 ratio or better. Additionally, work qualifying as R&D is eligible for numerous tax credits.

  4. Upon completion, the project partners and their properties are publicized as success stories to the national and/or international financial and natural resource communities.

Why become a Partner - companies, students, professionals

Companies - access software tools and new methods to more strategically use your historical and current geological datasets, transfer property knowledge, train your staff, and discover and develop deposits.

Students - obtain career-building experience through co-op, part-time and summer full-time placements. Positions are available for those enrolled in Geology, Engineering, Commerce and Computer Science programs.

Professionals - partner as a consulting subcontractor, gaining exposure to juniors and majors.
