Sudbury Mining Week (SMW)
MAY 8-14, 2006

As an annual event with activities for every age, Sudbury Mining Week aims to promote mining and its importance to the economy and culture of Northern Ontario. This community event is sponsored and organized by the public and private sectors, government, educational institutions and individuals.

Monday, March - Friday, March Sudbury Sudbury Geological Presentations
The SGDG will visit area schools and present to children in Grade 4, the importance of minerals, how they affect our lives here in Sudbury and to think about the future of mining and minerals in the future.
Saturday,April 8th Laurentian University Sudbury Regional Science Fair
The Science Fair discipline areas include: life sciences, physical sciences, engineering and computer sciences. This science fair is open to students in grades 6 thru to 12 from the Greater Sudbury School Boards. Students generally go through their school and /or board fair first and the winners register for the Sudbury Regional Science Fair.
Friday, May 5th Laurentian University Sudbury Regional Historica Fair - 10th Anniversary
This event is open to children in Grades 4 thru to 9. The Historica Fair is a multi-media education programme which is developed to increase awareness and interest in Canadian history. It is an event that actively involves young people, schools, businesses and community organizations in a contemporary celebration of our shared traditions and history. The focus for mining will be on the discovery of the first claim in the Sudbury Basin.
Monday May 8th - Friday, May 12th Sudbury Path of Discovery Tours
The Path of Discovery Tours is open to all schools in the Sudbury and Manitoulin area, the selection process is done thru a quiz that the children participate in. The tour leaves from Dynamic Earth and passes through the heart of the City of Greater Sudbury, leading through Inco's mining operations. The history of the city and the evolution of the Sudbury mining complex are outlined along the bus tour. The stops include: Frood-Stobie open pit and the superstack. The various processes involved in transforming rocks to riches is outlined.

Mining and Climate Change in 2050
Presentation by Dr. Dave Pearson, Professor of Earth Science at Laurentian University
Refreshments will be served prior to the lecture. Free and open to everyone! Presented by the Sudbury Geological Discussion Group.
Tuesday, May 9th Cambrian College - eDome Popsicle Headframe Building Contest
This competition is open to area secondary schools. The competition will demonstrate the structural design of headframes used in local mines. Students will be asked to contract a headframe for a mineshaft using onlyh popsicle sticks, carpenter's glue, hardwood dowels and toothpicks. These models will then be put to the test for overall load performance.
Monday, May 8th - Friday, May 12th Dynamic Earth Mining Games
At Dynamic Earth students from Grade 6 and up will participate in games where they will learn about mining and geology. Throughout their visit, students will accumulate points and compete against other schools for a trophy. In addition, students will take part in the DE experience by taking an underground tour, seeing Nickel City Stories and learning about mining and geology in the Earth Gallery and the MacLeod Rock Gallery.
Monday, May 8th - Friday, May 12th Secondary Schools Interactive School Booth
Sudbury Mining Week has constructed an interactive booth display that features a display of the Sudbury basin rocks; 3D poster images; recent graduates and industry representatives who are now working in the mining and geoscience fields. Laptop presentations on industry-related careers and the virtual reality technology managed by Laurentian University's MIRARCO.
Tuesday, May 9th Bryston's On The Park Business Luncheon
This luncheon is an opportunity for all sectors of the mining industry to gather and network together. The keynote speaker for this luncheon will be focusing on mining in our community and how we can work together as true partners for the benefit of all.
Guest Speaker will be Mark Cutifani, President, North America and Europe Inco Limited. Cost for tickets is $30. per person available from Paul Reid.
Saturday, May 13th New Sudbury Shopping Centre New Sudbury Shopping Centre Mall Display
The Mall Display will feature static display booths from our partnering committee members. There will be a variety of informative and interactive displays. Inco Ltd. Will be handing out pine seedlings;Dynamic Earth will have a gold panning experience for the young 'miners'; rock displays and booths focusing on educational opportunities in mining related fields will be presented.
  Civic Square Equipment Display
Underground and surface equipment used in the mining industry and made right here in the north will be displayed in the centre court area of Civic Square.
    Calendar Contest
Elementary School children will be encouraged to participate in a picture contest that would describe to them what "Mining In The Next Generation" will look like. The entries will be judged according to grade levels and twelve will be chosen to print a calendar for 2007.
