The Mining Innovation, Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation (MIRARCO) is a not-for-profit applied research and technical service company at Laurentian University, in Sudbury, Ontario. MIRARCO's teams use cutting-edge technology to stretch the envelope of research advances in mining optimization, geomechanics and virtual reality.
The Geomechanics Research Centre (GRC) was established in 1987 and has since developed into an internationally recognized group for its contributions in advancing the state-of-the-art in rock mechanics and mine design. GRC strives to develop geomechanics knowledge that can be used effectively by both experts and non-specialists in industrial and socioeconomic decision making processes. Additionally, GRC provides an impartial evaluation of the technical viability of new concepts or methods and provides specialized technical services to the mineral resource sector. GRC is currently involved in a number of initiatives related to mining faster, deeper and safer.
As Junior Research Engineer you will support the GRC research team by participating in various R&D projects, enhancing your experience and developing team building skills.
Job description:
Junior Research Engineers support GRC's researchers to execute projects in the most effective manner, on time, at high quality and within scope. They are expected to undertake arranged tasks with guidance from senior researchers and thus will acquire new, and hone existing skills.
Primary research assistant duties include lab and field testing (logging and mapping); building of numerical models; assistance in data collection and processing and reporting.
Qualifications:
Junior Research Engineers are expected to bring strong fundamental engineering or technical skill sets, an ability to learn quickly and a strong interest in acquiring new skills. Other skills include:
- Diploma or undergraduate degree in mining, geology or geological engineering
- Highly motivated self-starter with desire to develop skills
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Practical, hands-on aptitude
- Familiarity with computing and data processing tools (both software and hardware)
- Good fundamental understanding of geological and/or geomechanics principles
