The Mining Innovation, Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation (MIRARCO) is a not-for-profit applied research and technical service company at Laurentian University, in Sudbury, Ontario. MIRARCO's teams use cutting-edge technology to stretch the envelope of research advances in mining optimization, geo-mechanics, exploration and virtual reality.

The Virtual Reality and Exploration (VREX) group is MIRARCO's leading computer modeling and scientific visualization group. VREX provides both consulting and R&D services to national and international junior mining and exploration companies, and develops the use of advanced scientific visualization (virtual reality) and collaboration technologies. VREX also assists leading exploration companies with investor relation presentations and provides direct IT support services to other MIRARCO research groups. VREX staff combine expertise in geo-sciences and/or mining engineering with diverse, expert computer skills.

We currently have two openings for Computer Science or Engineering co-op placements working on developing algorithms and applications in a parallel processing environment using open source software. Projects will be related to developing mining engineering and exploration applications using Paraview. You are expected to have strong C++ background; additional python knowledge would also be of interest. Earth Science knowledge is a definite asset.

Work terms are for 4 to 8 months starting in September 2006 and January 2007.
