Ming Cai obtained his Bachelor and Master degrees in Hydraulic Structural Engineering from Tsinghua University in Beijing (China), and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Tokyo (Japan). He started his academic education and research work in Tsinghua University working on contract projects and course teaching. After completing his Ph.D. degree in Japan, he joined one of the world's largest electric power companies, Tokyo Electric Power Company, and worked in one of its subsidiary companies specialized in solving technically related engineering problems in electric power plant planning, design, and construction. He gained broad experience in numerical modeling, rock support for underground excavations, foundation engineering, and seismic engineering through extensive consulting projects. In 1997, he joined Geomechanics Research Centre and has since been actively involved in a wide range of research topics from microseismic event interpretation, numerical modeling method development, rock support design, to application of geophysical logging to underground mine design.
Dr. Cai has developed strong links with industrial partners extensively. Dr. Cai is the author of approximately 80 journal and conference papers and technical/contract reports in the field of geomechanics.
