Dr. Joinal Abedin joined the 'Centre for Environmental Monitoring' research group as a NSERC-Industrial Postdoctoral Research Fellow in September 2004. His research focuses on the understanding of the availability and toxicity of metals in soils/sediments/aerosols to vegetation, animals and humans through investigating their chemical forms (speciation) and way of bindings i.e. fractions (e.g. exchangeable, organically bound, bound with oxides and/ or hydroxides of Fe and Mn and residual). He will also assist graduate students in planning and execution of their research projects.

Dr. Abedin got his B.Sc.Ag (Hons.) and M.Sc.Ag (Soil science) from Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. After completion of his education in agriculture he worked in the field of soil, fertilizer management and plant nutrition as a research scientist at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute for more than 10 years. He obtained his Ph.D from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, UK, in 2002. In his Ph.D research he studied: effect of arsenic contaminated irrigation water on rice crop, arsenic distribution in soil and rice plant, arsenic speciation in soil and rice tissue and uptake kinetics of different arsenic species by different rice varieties.
