CIMTEC provides state-of-the-art technology in support of interdisciplinary research and development projects that are being actively pursued by researchers at MIRARCO and Laurentian University.

The initiative will enable faculty and staff researchers, graduate students, industry partners, and other research sponsors to interact and conduct high-end research that demands high speed, large volume data collection and transfer, as well as state-of-the-art data visualisation and communication capacity.

CIMTEC consists of a data acquisition facility with data storage capabilities and a database distribution network. The centre has a data processing facility that will serve engineering and scientific research and development goals.

By providing a computing network infrastructure that is equipped for future, large-scale research, MIRARCO, its business centres, and related University departments will evolve to a new level of interoperability, one that is required to achieve a comprehensive understanding of mining and its environment. This infrastructure will allow engineers and scientists to tackle larger, regional to global scale research projects and provide opportunities to develop monitoring applications with commercial partners, government agencies, and non-profit organisations.

CIMTEC's technology can encompass all aspects of monitoring, from remote data acquisition, storage and data processing to data dissemination for process control and operational decision making. The goal of this process will be to transfer new and relevant research knowledge to the private sector. This will be achieved by providing technical services and through professional development programs and student internships.

Technically, CIMTEC will be designed to serve five mining research focal points of Laurentian University and MIRARCO:

  • Mineral exploration and ground characterisation
  • Geomechanics and mine design
  • Equipment and operations control
  • Environmental monitoring
  • Mining safety
